Rainforest on Sand6th August 2009

We went to Fraser Island for a 3 day escape. We took the ferry at Hervey Bay and stayed at the Kingfisher Bay Resort in the Rainforest cabins.

Over the next two days, we crossed the island twice exploring the island and visiting Lake Mackenzie and Lake Wabby. We also visited the Maheno Wreck which has rusted itself away over the years.

If you want to escape the rat race or simply are planning a trip to Queensland post Mardi Gras or anytime during the year.... you simply cannot leave Australia without making it to Fraser Island.

World Heritage Listed Fraser Island lies on Queensland's coast near Hervey Bay - it's the largest sand island in the world and the only place on the planet where rainforest grows on sand!

Over 120 kilometres long and over 30 kilometres across at its widest point, the Island has developed over 800,000 years and is a unique natural environment.

Lake Mackenzie 6th August 2009
45 mins by 4WD in the centre of Fraser is Lake Mackenzie. The water is crystal blue yet transparent.
This fresh water lake is a must see and well worth the bumby sand tracks!

Lake Wabby6th August 2009
Lake Wabby is on the east coast of Fraser Island. Well worth a visit, make sure you bring footwear... the sand can get scorching hot and burn your feet!

Maheno Wreck6th August 2009
ship wreck
Fraser Island's famous shipwreck. There since 1939, it has rusted away to a dangerous pile of twisted metal. Its once famous structure is now almost unrecognisable.

We stayed at the Kingfisher Bay Resort for a couple of nights in the Rainforest cabins. At night, try the great seafood buffet, listen to the live music or just sip your drink relaxing by the pool staring at the stars.
